Hours after the BJP sealed its deal with the PDP on government formation in Jammu & Kashmir, the Centre informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that there is no proposal to repeal Article 370 which allows special autonomous status to the State.
This information was provided to the Upper House by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary in a written reply to an unstarred question on whether the Government intends to delete Article 370 of the Constitution. “There is currently no such proposal under consideration,” was the Ministry’s reply.
In its 2014 Lok Sabha election manifesto, the BJP had reiterated its stated position that the party remains committed to the abrogation of Article 370 and would discuss this with all stakeholders. One of the earliest controversies that the Modi Government waded into, in fact, pertained to Article 370. On the day he took charge as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office in May, Jitendra Singh said the process of abrogating Article 370 had begun and the Government was discussing the issue with several stakeholders in the State. He later retracted his statement when the Government came under attack.
